This groundbreaking study was recently published in Scientific Reports, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals. The joint research team analyzed 14,560 liposuction cases using machine learning techniques. The dataset included not only patients' height and weight, but also detailed body composition data obtained from InBody scans—such as muscle mass and body fat percentage. As a result, the AI model was able to predict the risk of respiratory depression with an impressive accuracy rate of 85.6%, demonstrating its practical potential for real-world clinical application. The model also showed a sensitivity of approximately 80%, indicating its high effectiveness in identifying at-risk patients. Key findings revealed that individuals with larger abdominal volumes, higher BMI, and older age had a greater risk of respiratory depression. Interestingly, those with smaller thigh circumference also showed an increased risk. Dr. Jae-won Seo, Director of Daegu 365mc Hospital and co-author of the study, noted that AI alone could yield meaningful predictions—and when combined with the judgment of anesthesiology specialists, the accuracy could further improve.
